Cinco de mayo is NOT Mexican Independence Day!! It is a commemoration of a victory in the Battle at Puebla in 1862 against the French. Around this time, Mexico owed a lot of money to some European Nations. France was one of these nations and at the time was ruled by Napoleon III. In his attempt to overthrow Mexico City, his troops passed through a small town called Puebla. Here the French were defeated by the Mexican underdogs but the French did eventually rule Mexico for several years.
