Yesterday was el 16 de septiembre, “el día de independencia de México.” On September 16, 1810, in the small town of Dolores, Mexican priest, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, called on the people of Mexico to fight for independence from Spain. The speech he made is called “el Grito de Dolores”. He cried out for Mexicans to rise up and take charge of their destiny. His Grito eventually rallied tens of thousands of people, mostly very poor Indians, to fight and change Mexico forever. Traditionally at 11pm the President of Mexico issues an update on the Grito, after the original bell that Father Hidalgo used is rung, near midnight on the 15th and celebration begins.
